Teaching

"There are no masters; only good students."

Christopher teaches students of all ages, regardless of experience or ability.  He strives to  develop independence in his students through an emphasis on technique and musicianship.  Lessons are offered exclusively at Reed Music Studios in Onalska, WI, near La Crosse.  Students attend from all over the surrounding area, including, Minnesota and Iowa.

Jaden Guitar StudentOver the years, Christopher has enjoyed great success as a guitar teacher.  With his extensive classical training, a diverse mix of learning experiences and refined teaching techniques, Christopher has produced scores of fine guitarists, many of whom have gone on to become successful musicians in their own right.

Christopher is passionate about the art of refined movement as it applies to fundamental guitar technique.  He works diligently to impart a clear understanding of not only the visual and auditory, but also the physical relationship between the instrument and the player.

Christopher Rude's Guitar Students

Classical guitarist Lana RodionovaUnderstanding that every student has unique skills and methods of learning, Christopher differentiates his instruction to suit the needs of each individual, yielding the best possible chance for success.  Where some instructors are proponents of only one style and methodology, Christopher has embraced many, and supports the aesthetic goals of the student, while stressing the tenets of strong fundamental skill and musicianship that foster musical independence.

Corbin Chris's guitar studentChristopher's students perform regularly in recitals hosted by Reed Music at the La Crosse Public Library and at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse.

Hear some technically challenging music...

  • Augustín Barrios-Mangoré - Prelude in Em
Play Augustín Barrios-Mangoré - Prelude in EmAugustín Barrios-Mangoré - Prelude in EmAugustín Barrios-Mangoré - Prelude in Em
When played swiftly, this little prelude takes on a charming character.  Without sound shifting and pivoting techniques, however, it becomes impossible at any tempo.
  • H. Villa-Lobos - Etude 2
    Play H. Villa-Lobos - Etude 2H. Villa-Lobos - Etude 2H. Villa-Lobos - Etude 2
This study in double-octave arpeggios is enough to make any guitarist want to quit.  You'll need every technical trick in the book just to play it, and to emulate Barrueco's epic recording is practically impossible.
  • Manuel Ponce Prelude 21
Play Manuel Ponce Prelude 21Manuel Ponce Prelude 21Manuel Ponce Prelude 21
This brief fugue in two voices features a cute theme and light character, belying some extreme technical challenges.  Mastering these challenges requires skillful navigation through the awkward key of B flat major by way of thoughtful and deliberate fingerings for both hands.
  • Required material in many graduate guitar programs, Bach's lute suites are a musical dream for the listener and a technical nightmare for the performer.  Nothing is more difficult to play than an up-tempo performance of intricate counterpoint by the master of masters.
